Recently, a paper petition was submitted to the Essex / Westford School District (EWSD). It was a petition in support of our equity policy.
That petition recieved over 1000 signatures in 72 hours! Nice job, Essex & Westford! (Remember that Essex, Vermont, has a popluation of only 21k, and Westford about 2k.)
When that petition was presented to the board in time for the vote on the equity poilicy, our citizen activism was a big reason why the board voted 8-1 for Equity. Especially given a counter-petition, which started much earlier, had less than 100 signers. (We are only counting the non-anonymous signers.)
That said, we think the fight against equity is a stalking horse for their real goals: to defund local education through school vouchers.
We support the funding of high quality, local, secular, public schools. If you agree-- and you live in Essex or Westford, Vermont -- please sign and share our change.org petition. So we can keep Essex & Westford schools some of the best public schools in the nation.
